I was born in Sioux City, IA, moved to Chicago 3 weeks later, to Wichita, KS 3 years after that, then to Dallas when I was 4. I consider myself a Texan, since I really don’t remember anything else. My ongoing “hobbies” growing up were singing, playing guitar (and 5-string banjo for awhile), piano and ballet. No history of great performances, though I did dance in musicals in high school and musicals/operas in college, and helped choreograph some, too. Fun stuff.
I started at CSC in February 2000, hired as a “production assistant”. My qualifications at the time consisted of having taught myself to use Quark and Photoshop (after a brief intro from a couple of people who knew how) while designing/producing a catalog for a company whose owners were business contacts/friends of my husband. I also had a rather dusty Graphic Design/Illustration BFA from UT at Austin from 1983. The time in between getting the degree (my second, the first was a BA in Spanish and German from Trinity U in San Antonio, 1976) and getting the job involved getting “saved”, married, having 5 kids and having a ton of fun raising them and managing to live on one income. That involved living in a very old 2-bedroom duplex for 14 years over near SMU in University Park. My kids are extremely creative as a result of having lots of sticks, dirt, dumpster rescues, hand-me-downs and whatever to play, build, and invent games with. Bryan and I just completed 24 years of marriage recently, and are hoping to manage an Alaskan cruise next summer to celebrate the 25th (Alaska in November would not work….) Bryan lived in Alaska for 4 years when he was young, and has always wanted to go back.
Most of you know what I do at CSC, but in a nutshell: enter timesheets, miscellaneous admin maintenance (like rolodex, work orders, saving job email etc), production support (all apps of CS3), proofreading, grammar consulting, foreign language support (this usually consists only of noticing if something is or seems wrong in Spanish, French, German or Russian – you forget a lot in 30 years, don’t ask me “how do you say…?”), portfolio maintenance, and generally whatever. I have greatly enjoyed working for CSC and benefited greatly from all that I have learned and continue to learn here.
[I’m also the resident child-rearing consultant, though all I can do is make suggestions. All 5 of my kids are different, and what works for one doesn’t necessarily work for another.]:)
